The federal government stopped delivery of free at-home Covid tests on September 2, 2022. We still have options – COVID is still with us, and we’re heading into cold and flu season? Fortunately, most of us can still get the tests we need free of charge. If Congress approves more funding, the government has promised to resume the program.
Key Points
- If you have insurance, your bill will be covered by your healthcare provider
- If you don’t have insurance, you can get at-home test kits from some community health centers or Medicare-certified clinics.
- Some insurance companies will cover the cost upfront when you purchase. Other plans will reimburse you if you submit a claim with receipts.
How many tests can you receive?
Currently, insurers are required to pay for eight at-home tests per month for every person enrolled in your health plan. Families of three could get 24 tests every month. The Biden administration gives incentives to providers to make the process easier. Many Walgreen and CVS pharmacies participate.
Do I have to pay up front?
The tests will be free at purchase or later reimbursed. So, keep your receipts in case your plan requires you to file a claim. For the uninsured, Federally Qualified Health Clinics (FQHCs) are trying to respond to this need in underserved populations. For example, FQHC clinics such as Zufall Health in NJ have set up a program with LabCorp to keep the costs of at-home Covid tests to a minimum.
How long will this support last?
Initially, this federal requirement was to carry through until the end of the COVID health emergency. However, President Biden recently announced that the pandemic is over. Time will tell how this will affect this coverage in the coming year. For now, it’s a good idea to order your tests while supplies last and the federal incentive is in place.
