Provider using tools to find lower cost for membersGoodRx tools can help search lower cost medication for members

GoodRx, the prescription discount program, released a Provider Mode portal for Health Care Professionals (HCPs) in early October.

This tool can help doctors find the best price for a medication and help patients stay on track with their treatments.

Prescription discount cards, like SingleCare, GoodRx and America’s Pharmacy, are a great resource for people who:

  • don’t have medical or pharmacy insurance,
  • have high co-pays
  • do not have coverage for certain medicines.

For example, GoodRx discount cards can save patients up to 80% of the cost of a prescription.  However, price checking with the GoodRx website or mobile app is needed to help patients see if or where GoodRx would give them a better price.  A coupon is then generated to get that discount.

The new Provider Mode portal was designed for physician offices, to quickly find the best price for a medicine or a lower priced alternative at point-of-care.  They can also send the GoodRx coupon directly to patients as an email or text without sharing their personal information.

HCPs know that if prescriptions are not affordable, patient outcomes will suffer.  The goal of the portal is to help doctors who are often pressed for time provide more effective patient care.

Certain populations are especially at-risk.

In a 2021 AARP survey of registered voters age 50 and older, “nearly one-fifth (19 percent) said they had not filled a doctor’s prescription in the past two years, with the most common reason being that they could not pay for it.”

Will medical offices use the new Provider Mode?

Most doctors already use an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) as part of their normal workflow.  If the Provider tool can easily fit into that process, this could benefit both doctors and their patients on an ongoing basis.

You can always ask your doctor about the GoodRx price checking feature on your next visit.  GoodRx has reported that the Provider support has seen an almost 90% opt-in rate since it started rolling out.

If this trend continues, then this could be a win-win for everyone.  These type of Digital health tools continue to add value in healthcare.
