A zero-sugar soda at lunch, a packet of sweetener in your morning coffee, and a sugar-free protein bar after work can add up quickly.
So, are artificial sweeteners safe to consume every day?
For most people, FDA-approved sweeteners are considered safe when used within established safety limits. But “safe” doesn’t necessarily mean they should make up a large part of your daily diet.
The bigger questions are how much you consume, which sweetener you’re using, and what it is replacing.
Are artificial sweeteners safe for daily use?
The FDA permits several high-intensity sweeteners, including aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, neotame and advantame. Certain stevia-derived sweeteners and monk fruit extracts are also permitted for use under specific conditions.
The FDA establishes an acceptable daily intake (ADI) for many sweeteners. This is the amount considered safe to consume every day over a lifetime, with a substantial safety margin.
For example, the FDA’s ADI is 50 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day for aspartame and 5 milligrams per kilogram for sucralose.
Most people don’t come close to these limits through normal consumption.

What about aspartame and cancer?
Aspartame made headlines in 2023 when the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified it as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”
That doesn’t mean aspartame has been proven to cause cancer at normal consumption levels. IARC evaluates whether a substance could potentially cause cancer, while food-safety agencies assess the risk at actual exposure levels.
The Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) maintained its acceptable daily intake for aspartame at 40 mg/kg of body weight. The FDA also continues to consider approved uses of aspartame safe.

The practical takeaway: there is no need to panic about occasional or moderate aspartame consumption, but it also isn’t a reason to consume unlimited amounts.
Can sweeteners help with diabetes and weight?
Non-sugar sweeteners generally don’t raise blood glucose like regular sugar, making them useful for people trying to reduce sugar and carbohydrates.
For example, replacing a regular soda with a zero-sugar version can immediately reduce added sugar and calories.
But the long-term picture is more complicated. Some observational studies have linked higher consumption of non-sugar sweeteners with obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These studies cannot prove that sweeteners caused those conditions because people at higher health risk may be more likely to choose diet products.
The World Health Organization therefore recommends not relying on non-sugar sweeteners as a long-term weight-control strategy for the general population.

The American Diabetes Association allows non-sugar sweeteners in moderation as a short-term replacement for sugar-sweetened products, while recommending water as the preferred beverage.

What about gut health?
Claims that artificial sweeteners “damage the gut” go beyond what current research can prove.
Some laboratory, animal and human studies suggest certain sweeteners may affect gut bacteria, but results have been mixed. Researchers are still studying how different sweeteners, doses and individual diets may affect the microbiome.

If a particular sugar-free product consistently causes bloating, gas or diarrhea, reducing it is reasonable. But an individual reaction doesn’t mean the ingredient is unsafe for everyone.
Don’t confuse artificial sweeteners with sugar alcohols
Sugar alcohols such as erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol and maltitol are different from artificial sweeteners.
They’re commonly found in sugar-free candy, gum and protein bars. Consuming large amounts can cause gas, bloating, cramps or diarrhea.
Research has also raised questions about erythritol and cardiovascular health, but it has not established that eating erythritol causes heart attacks or strokes.
Who should avoid certain sweeteners?
People with phenylketonuria (PKU) need to avoid or restrict aspartame because it contains phenylalanine. Products containing aspartame carry a warning for people with PKU.
For everyone else, the best approach is to consider the overall diet rather than focusing on one ingredient.
A practical approach to artificial sweeteners
You don’t necessarily need to eliminate artificial sweeteners.
Instead:
- Use them to replace sugar, rather than adding more sweet foods to your diet.
- Choose water, sparkling water, unsweetened tea and coffee more often.
- Check ingredient labels because several sweeteners may appear in the same product.
- Gradually reduce your preference for very sweet foods and drinks.
- If a product causes repeated digestive symptoms, try reducing or eliminating it.
